Premeditate an unclear description Series
2024Premeditating an Unclear Description takes the city’s most common and most overlooked—fence structures as its foundational architecture and inherent boundary. Within this framework, I stage a deliberate and delicate choreography of spatial misdirection, a quiet but insistent act of swapping narratives.
In this series, the “swap” is not merely a formal displacement, but a spatial operation aimed at the power relations embedded in narrative itself:
Who is protected, and who is being watched?
Who belongs to the public, and who is relegated to the private?
These seemingly naturalized roles are systematically reversed and dismantled. The work does not intend to clarify or justify these shifts; instead, it prompts viewers to repeatedly ask within the space:
Is the original order still intact?
Who is protecting whom?
Where, now, is the center?
Narrative is quietly handed over, deferred, and suspended—landing in a space that is unclear yet unmistakably concrete.
Objects within the installation are extracted from their usual functions and enter a state of instrumental confusion and spatial drift:
Anti-theft spikes are turned into “protected beings”; a domestic table is conscripted into the city’s infrastructure and transformed into a fountain, allowing the public and the private to seep into one another; a transparent resin fletching attached to a stainless-steel arrow plunges into a mound of white quartz sand—an immaculate desert, a site of purposelessness, an action aimed at nothing yet unable to fully stop.
The suspended stainless-steel sphere becomes a celestial body belonging to the city, reflecting its surroundings with a bright, cool indifference. It reads as a gentle version of surveillance, but also as surveillance watching itself. The short poem inscribed on the chain is a soft murmur left between metal structures, forming a threshold where language and infrastructure meet and fail to fully merge.
Here, unclearness is never a failure of description, nor is it the collapse of intention.
It is a precisely constructed gesture of mischief, a quiet resistance against the demand to be legible.
Ambiguity is not the breakdown of meaning, but its generative mechanism.
The work refuses a complete, sealed interpretation; it replaces certainty with blur, linear narrative with drifting space, allowing things to continually generate, shift, and unfix themselves within an unstable grammar of forms.
